Count by cluster
The 2010 ADA Standards look at each cluster of portable toilets on its own. If restrooms stand in two places, plan accessible units for each place, not one for the whole site.
ADA-accessible restrooms
ADA-accessible portable restrooms are available for events, parks, weddings, and job sites across the Phoenix Valley. We help you work out how many your setup needs, where they go so a wheelchair user can reach them, and how they fit with the rest of your restroom order.

Your options
An accessible unit works only if a wheelchair user can reach it and get inside. Plan these four things.
The 2010 ADA Standards look at each cluster of portable toilets on its own. If restrooms stand in two places, plan accessible units for each place, not one for the whole site.
Keep the ground at the unit and on the way to it firm and level, with no curb, loose gravel, soft sand, or lawn ruts in between.
Leave open space in front of the door so a wheelchair can turn and line up, and keep coolers, cords, and signs out of it.
Tell us who will use the accessible unit and what your venue or city asks for, so the unit sits where people need it.
Planning the work
The 2010 ADA Standards for Accessible Design apply to temporary as well as permanent buildings and facilities covered by the ADA (section 201.3). Section 213.2, Exception 3, covers portable toilets: "Where multiple single user portable toilet or bathing units are clustered at a single location, no more than 5 percent of the toilet units and bathing units at each cluster shall be required to comply with 603." Units that comply are marked with the International Symbol of Accessibility.
The Access Board's advisory note calls a cluster "a group of toilet rooms proximate to one another," generally "within sight of, or adjacent to, one another." Section 104.2 says that when a percentage leaves a fraction, "the next greater whole number" applies. So a cluster of 10 portable toilets works out to one accessible unit, and a cluster of 30 works out to two. If you are not sure your event is covered, ask your venue or your city's special events office.
Section 603 sets the room rules: turning space inside the room, and a door that does not swing into the clear floor space needed at any fixture, unless the room is for individual use and has a clear floor space beyond the door's swing (section 603.2.3, Exception 2). Under section 304.3, turning space is a circle at least 60 inches across or a T-shaped space within a 60-inch square. Section 604 covers the toilet itself, including the clearance around it and grab bars on the side wall closest to the toilet and on the rear wall.
On a construction site, section 203.2 exempts portable toilet units provided for use exclusively by construction personnel. The exemption is written for crews only; if inspectors, clients, or visitors will use the restrooms, tell us so we can add an accessible unit.
