Plan your restroom rental: headcount, placement, power, and water

How many restrooms do I need?

Two Maricopa County rules set the legal floor. They are minimums, not comfort targets, so we recommend a setup from your peak attendance, hours, and the kind of event or project.

Public gatherings

Chapter II, Section VI, Regulation 5 of the Maricopa County Environmental Health Code covers "any public gathering for any commercial, religious, or public event" where adequate permanent toilet facilities are not provided on the immediate premises. Toilets adequate for the estimated attendance must be located within 200 feet of the gathering, "with the minimum of 1 toilet per 100 persons in attendance or as required by the Environmental Health Officer." If you are not sure whether your event counts, ask Maricopa County Environmental Services.

Construction, alteration, and repair projects

The same regulation requires toilets "for the use of persons on the project in a ratio of at least one (1) toilet per twenty (20) persons," located on or within 200 feet of each work area. OSHA's construction standard, 29 CFR 1926.51(c), adds its own table based on the number of employees. These are Maricopa County's rules. For an address in another county, such as Pinal County, confirm that county's requirements before you plan.

Accessible restrooms

The 2010 ADA Standards for Accessible Design apply to buildings and facilities covered by the ADA, including temporary ones. Section 213.2, Exception 3, addresses single-user portable toilet units: where multiple single-user portable toilet or bathing units are clustered at a single location, no more than 5 percent of the units at each cluster must meet the accessible toilet room requirements, and those units are marked with the International Symbol of Accessibility. That exception is written for clustered single-user portable units; it does not describe restroom trailers.

Section 203.2 exempts portable toilet units provided for use exclusively by construction personnel on a construction site. ADA-accessible portable restrooms are available; tell us how many restroom locations you plan, and we will recommend the accessible units and confirm what we can supply. Where will the restrooms go?

Choose a level, reachable location that does not block emergency access, traffic, utilities, or event circulation. The delivery path and final placement both need to support the equipment. Keep enough room for setup, routine service when applicable, and pickup.

• Slope: a trailer needs a level pad and a porta potty a level spot; tell us about grades, curbs, and soft or freshly watered ground.
• Route: gate widths, tight turns, low branches, and overhead lines on the way in.
• Neighbors and rules: HOA, venue, or property rules about trailers, vendor parking, and quiet hours.
• Underground: septic tanks, drain fields, irrigation, and buried lines the delivery vehicle should avoid.

Power and water

Porta potties need no hookups. For a restroom trailer, we will confirm the exact power, water, waste, and clearance requirements before delivery. To plan it, tell us:

• Where the nearest outdoor outlet or electrical service is, and its distance from the placement spot.
• Where the nearest water spigot is, and its distance from the placement spot.
• Whether either connection is shared with caterers, tents, or crews during the rental.
• Who on your side keeps the connections on for a long rental.
